The route takes us along the coast to the Gosport peninsula stopping in Stokes Bay for a water top up. We then cross the harbour – on a ferry – and cycle through Southsea to the Hayling Ferry. As we enter the island we stop again at the start of the Hayling Billy Trail before setting off towards Havant and Woodmancote. The stop here is outside a pub which will sadly be closed when we get there! We then travel towards Chichester taking the southern end of the Centurion Way to enter the town, avoiding MacDonald’s and heading out to Oving and the Gribble Inn where we shall partake of a little liquid refreshment. The afternoon takes in a gentle ride through Barnham and Yapton before cycling along Littlehampton’s sandy beaches to the overnight stop at East Preston. |
Blog: Well today has been a mixed day for us all. Firstly the weather was pritty good all the way though. The first section of the ride was very fast particularly because we were riding a route that we trained on. After getting in to Hayling it started to get a lot more lumpy but we managed to keep up the pace all the way to the end. We have managed to put a smile on a few faces too. We are not looking forward to getting back on them in the morning, because tommorrow has even more miles!
In fact, for the geeks here are the stats;
Total mileage today - 59.029 miles.
Average Speed - 13.9 Miles an hour (Just so you know thats fast!)
Maximum Speed - 74.4 MPH !!!!! (this might not be right i think but its what my screen says :) )
Actual Maximum Speed 31.1 MPH

The most challenging of all the days starts off gently with a run down to the coast again and cycling along the shore through Worthing and out to Shoreham for the first stop of the day. Cycling though the harbour we make our way to Brighton where we stop in the shadow of Roedean School for a quick peek and our future gentry.
This is where it gets challenging because from here it starts to go seriously uphill. Saltdean and Peacehaven will have us puffing before we drop into Newhaven for a breather. This is swiftly followed by another hill in Saltdean before dropping down once more into the Cuckmere Valley. We follow this all the way through to the north of Eastbourne before dropping down once more to the coast at Pevensey levels. Along the coast to Bexhill on Sea where we make a final stop before climbing uphill for three miles to the hotel. The hotel at the bottom of the hill was fully booked – so much for planning!! |
Blog: Well what an interesting day! it started off being quite damp but after previous years nothing that we couldn't handle but was very windy thankfully for us the wind was behind us. but after about 45 miles i was getting the urge to give up.
Gaz and dad and Geoff kept me going. And Gaz (our master mechanic) had to change the inner tube on my bcak wheel after hitting a shap pointy piece of flint. Every time we tuned slightly the wind would be on our right (making it hard to see when you have a ridiculosly large flag flapping in your face. :) the last 4 miles were killer with one hilll being 1:3 and lots mor uphill right up to the door of the hotel.
We tried to get food but it took 2 hours to turn up not what you need after cycling 66 miles!!!!
Stats total for ride;
Miles traveled - 124.84
Average Speed - 12.9
Maximum Speed - 37.9!!!!! < holy crap!!! :)

Having had such a challenging day yesterday, this is supposed to be a breeze. However, like all breezes, sometimes there are strong gusts and this is no exception. Hastings is very hilly, goodness knows how William managed to win the battle, it is a long way up from the boats!! Having had a seriously fun down hill start, we are faced with the biggest climb of the whole ride – a rise of 600 ft in about 1.5 miles!!! The stop at the top has very nice views across the sea and an indication of the hill that we can go down again!! Dropping back down to the Pett levels we ride on beneath the sea wall to Winchelsea. After stopping for a snack we continue on to Rye and then out across the flats to Camber Sands and Pontins where I won man of the week (a long time ago). After stopping by the beach we go inland through Lydd and out towards Old Romney where we might get some lunch, but certainly some beer. Cycling through the small villages of the Romney Marshes – with no hills – we head towards Hythe (the Kent version) where there is a very nice railway. The last leg takes us back along the coast to Folkestone where, after a final hill we cycle along the Lees to the finish at the Bandstand – and the Pavilion that has nice beer – I checked. Phew!!! |
Blog:Today has started (acoording to the master mechanic "wet and windy but looks like it might get brighter." famous last words. Pictures are on facebook for now.
What a great day fastest speed longest part of trip. Tallest climbs highest windspeeds. it was really hard work but workth every last ounce of energy to see little joshua bouncing up and down with baby Darcey at our finnish line.
Its nice to know that 175 miles was achiveable and that we have managed to rasie nearly £650.00 for our cause.
we are really greatfull for all the help and support of our "Support Team" Geoff, Betty, Helena Key and Gaz Bryant. without them we would have crumbled in the first thirty miles. |
